I got a brochure in the mail a few weeks ago. It was attempting to sell me a summer program that my kid – a recent college grad - could take to learn how to find a job and launch a business career. The company that had created the program knows all the marketing “buttons” to push when addressing parents who are worried about their kids’ job prospects. The summer program will be held on the campus of a prestigious college, even though the program doesn’t seem to be run by that college exactly. The brochure is full of pictures of that campus – the verdant quadrangles, rolling hills in the distance, ivy-hung buildings, and all the window dressing.
There are pictures of students who have supposedly emerged from the program. They are shown wearing suits and toting $400 brief cases as they walk into job interviews. The program looks pretty good until you start to wonder about the cost, which isn’t given on the brochure. You have to call or email to request information. At that point, the program’s salespeople will come at you like you’re a carp at a shark convention. I bet that the program costs something on the order of about $10,000. You know the deal – if you have to ask how much it costs, you can’t afford it.
